Questions to Ask a Tradesman

The following questions will help you get the information you need to hire the right builder or contractor to work on your home.

1. How long has the contractor been in business?
2. Can the contractor provide references from similar jobs to this one?
3. What trade associations is the builder or tradesman affiliated with?
4. Does the contractor have insurance to cover the property?
5. Does the contractor have a published business address?
6. What is the time frame for starting and completing the project?
7. Ask the contractor what percentage of their business comes from referrals or repeat business.
8. Will they be using subcontractors to carry out this project?
9. Can the contractor provide a guarantee?
10. Will the tradesman be responsible for any clean up and rubbish collection that is required afterwards?
