How to Avoid / Spot Cowboys

We have all heard stories about unsuspecting homeowners who have hired a contractor for a home improvement project only to be taken advantage of by a 'cowboy' contactor who does little work, often causes more problems than he fixes, and then presents the homeowner with an excessive bill far higher than the contracted amount.

Fortunately, such contractors are in a minority, but it is crucial, to take precautionary steps to ensure that you don't hire a dishonest contractor for work in your home.

There are warning signs you can look for when choosing a tradesman. If you are not comfortable working with a tradesman, builder or contracting company, do not hire them for your home improvement or building job.

    1. Beware of contractors that offer you a cheap cash deal.
    2. A builder should not look for money for materials up front.
    3. A quality contractor should always be able to provide you with a certificate of insurance.
    4. An honest tradesman will be more than happy to provide references.
    5. Avoid any tradesman who does not provide a written quotation.
    6. If a tradesman claims to be a member of a trade association, check up on that association to ensure that it is legitimate and confirm the status of the tradesman's membership.
    7. Beware of a tradesman who does not have a registered business address.
    8. Beware of a tradesman that gives you an unusually low quote.
    9. Avoid doing business with any contractor who puts you under pressure to commit to a contract quickly.
