Here is a checklist of 10 steps you should take when finding and hiring the right contractor for your home improvement project.

1. Make a list of all possible tradesmen who can do the job.
2. Contact the tradesmen.
3. Compare prices and time estimates.
4. Check all references.
5. Check the background of the tradesman.
• Do they belong to a respected trade body?
• How long have they been in business?
6. Request a full written quotation.
7. Never pay any money up-front.
8. Ensure that you have all relevant planning permissions and building permits before starting the project.
9. Ensure that you are happy to work with the individual.
10. Finalise and sign the contract before any work starts.
