Installing a garden pond
When you are installing a garden pond, you have to build it in a place where
it could be both under the sun and under the shade
The pond has to be under sunshine for a few hours a day, but it can't be exposed
to direct sunlight all day. You can create shade by installing a raised edge,
by planting vegetation on banks or placing water lilies in the pond.
Prefabricated ponds:
These are available in various types of synthetic matters and various dimensions,
forms and thicknesses
You can't choose yourself the dimension of your pond because you depend on the
different forms which are available.
It is often equipped with various levels of plantation and an edge with marsh
which permits you to create natural bank vegetation.
A pond is really easy to install by yourself:
First you must dig a hole approximately 10 cm broader than the pond, then equalize
the ground to make it horizontal, you have to measure the additional stages
and dig them with the most possible precision. Place the pond in the hole and
fill the cavities surrounding the pond. To conclude you have to compress slightly
the ground before filling the pond with water.
Membrane:
All formats are possible!
There is more work and skill required to make the pond yourself compared to
purchasing a prefabricated pond.
The membrane is available in roller, but can also be carried out to measure,
which avoids having to make connections.
Placement:
• Dig a ditch with a natural aspect of some 80 cm of depth
• Withdraw the pointed stones or other objects of the ground
• Cover the ground with a fabric of protection
• Place the membrane on the fabric of protection
• The pond ground bags are put on the membrane for the watery plants or
a carpet of vegetation (open these bags only at the places where you install
plants).
Adding water
If you are using running water, you must remove chlorine with a suitable product
(after the filling). Always pour a small pot of freeze-dried bacteria and possibly,
a bucket of genuine water or marsh. Be careful with polluted or doubtful ponds,
tried to avoid it.
Fish:
The watery plants and the water chips have to develop so you have to wait for
a month or two before putting fish into the pond. Do not put too many fish in
the pond (maximum of 5 fish per 1,000 liters of water).
Plants:
. Plants will emit oxygen into the pond which is good for the fish.
. The floating plants create shade.
. Plants have a high decorative value.
Accessories:
. Fountain: You have to remember that the spray can burn the sheets of the plants
if the rays of the sun are too strong.
. Pump with oxygen, cascades of water, etc. will give movement and life to your
pond
. Tests: in order to control and to maintain the biological balance of the pond
. Anti-icing: placed on water in the case of freezing. When the pond is cold
it makes sure of the arrival of oxygen and the evacuation of nitrogen.
