Tile Buying GuideWith so many different types of tiles to choose from, finding the perfect tile for your floor, countertop or wall improvement project can be a daunting task. Traditionally, tiles were available in a small range of neutral colours, such as white, beige, or grey. In recent years however, a wider range of colours or tiles have been introduced. Tiles are available in a variety of materials. The material used will determinte the durability, heat resistance, and moisture absorption of the tile, so it is important to choose the right material for the situation. Glazed tile is made from pressed clay with a hardened 'glaze' whigh acts as both a decorative and protective cover. Tiles are very often hand painted with a decorative finish. Glazed tiles very often have a slippery finish, so will not be suitable for floors. Mosaic tiles are finished differently to glazed tiles. While glazed tiles have the coloured finished on the outside of the tile, mosaic tiles have colour pigments going right through the clay. Mosaic tiles are suitable for a wide range of uses because they resist moisture and do not chip easily. Another type of tile is Quarry tile. This is made from a mixture of clays, and it is usually left unglazed and is red or brown in colour. Natural materials such as marble and granite are also popular choices for tiles. However, these materials are typically used only for high-end projects because of the cost. |
